Adornment sponsors an Annual Conference on Jewelry & Related Arts.

Ahead of Its Time: Art Jewelry in the Milieu of 1900....October 11-13, 2008 in conjunction with the exhibition Imperishable Beauty: Art Nouveau Jewelry currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston through November 9.

An all-day conference takes place Sunday, October 12 at The Massachusetts College of Art. The extra study day on Saturday, October 11 is sold out but space is still available for the extra study day on Monday, October 13.

Elyse Zorn Karlin, Publisher, Editor-in-Chief

Elyse Zorn Karlin is the founder of Adornment. She is also the author of the definitive book on jewelry of the Arts & Crafts Movement, Jewelry and Metalwork in the Arts & Crafts Tradition and co-author of Imperishable Beauty: Art Nouveau Jewelry. She is author of seven other books.

Karlin is the past president of The American Society of Jewelry Historians and was editor of the organization’s newsletter for nine years. She writes on jewelry for a number of publications and is a well-known lecturer. She is co-director of the Association for the Study of Jewelry & Related Arts (ASJRA) and The Annual Conference on Jewelry & Related Arts.


Yvonne J. Markowitz, Editor

After working as a research fellow in the Egyptian section, Art of the Ancient World, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Yvonne J. Markowitz was appointed the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator of Jewelry. The first curatorship of its kind in America, Markowitz oversees the museum’s exceptional collection of jewelry. She is also the past editor of the Journal of the American Society of Jewelry Historians and the editor of Adornment.

A frequent lecturer, she has published extensively in the area of ancient and contemporary jewelry and is the co-author of forthcoming book on Tiffany jewelry to be released in Fall 2008 and Imperishable Beauty: Art Nouveau Jewelry. She is co-director of The Association for the Study of Jewelry & Related Arts and The Annual Conference on Jewelry & the Related Arts.


Eric J. Hoffman, Contributing Editor, Asian Subjects

Eric J. Hoffman has written about subjects including Chinese jades, archer rings and snuff bottles for Adornment. An aficianado of Chinese jades for over 35 years, he is a member of Friends of Jade, a jade consultant to the Chinese Cultural Relic Association, and a frequent lecturer. Following 40 years as an engineer in the space program, he now runs Hoffman's Far East Gallery, an online jade business.


Gail Brett Levine, G.G., Contributing Editor, Gemology

Gail Brett Levine is a GIA graduate gemologist and the owner of Timeless, a jewelry appraisal business. She is also the Executive Director of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers, runs the online service Auction Market Report for Gems & Jewelry, and is the program director for the GIA Alumni Association, New York Chapter. She writes for Adornment on gemological subjects as well as other jewelry subjects.


Lael Hagan, G.G., Contributing Editor

Lael Hagan is a GIA graduate gemologist and a jewelry historian. She writes for Adornment on a number of subjects including the auction report, maker’s marks, jewelry terminology and also writes feature articles for Adornment.

Sigrid van Roode, European Contributing Editor

Sigrid is a heritage managment consultant. She specializes in Bedouin jewelry from north Africa and the Middle East, in particular its social and apotropaic aspects.

Numerous other writers including curators, jewelry historians, gemologists, and experts write for Adornment as well. We have writers in Europe as well as the United States who contribute to Adornment.
